Lifestyle: German Christmas Markets in Birmingham

ITS CHRISTMAAASSS!!! Ok well not yet, but December is here and I can officially not feel guilty for getting well and truly into the Christmas spirit. For me, this involves blasting Christmas songs morning, noon and night, eating copious amounts of naughty food, catching up with friends and family over mulled wine and minced pies, decorating the house in sparkly attire and lots of festive baking. I'm hoping to make some quite crafty home made gifts this year so I'm sure that will take up lots of time too! (Still have my dissertation to write though... sigh.) Anyway, with December comes the arrival of the German Christmas markets, which are the best things ever! I don't have anything like this at home but I think they arrive in most of the big cities. If you aren't really in the festive spirit yet I would recommend having a look round in the evenings as they really do feel magical.

The market I went to was in Birmingham's city centre and it is huge! We went on a night where it rained the whole time but even though we were wet and cold we had a really great time. The best part about these markets are the food! We ate SO much and bought some for later too; giant hotdogs, pretzels, doughnuts, chocolate covered strawberries, handmade chocolates, pancakes, frosted nuts, mulled wine, gingerbread, hot Pimms... the list goes on. There are also lots of stalls which sell cute and quirky hand made gifts which are great to peruse. By the large fountain there was a band playing jazzy Christmas songs and this combined with the Christmas lights and hustle and bustle of the crowds made the atmosphere so Christmassy and magical it was really lovely.

To end the night we decided to go on the Ferris wheel at the very end (or beginning if you went the other way) of the market. I'd never been on one before and immediately regretted it when we ended up stationary right at the top, swinging in the wind (see bottom picture). However, once we started moving properly it was actually quite romantic seeing over the top of Birmingham and all the twinkly lights and was a lovely way to top off the evening.

Have you been to the Christmas markets yet? xxx
